Ooh La La!

I'm so stoked over this interactive seating chart of Citifield, the Mets new home for the 2009 season and beyond. I did a fair amount of clicking around, and I have to admit all of my suppressed super-nerd tendencies came back in a flash. I spent a long while picking out where I want to sit for what games against what teams. SUPER-NERD! I told you so.

If you click on the top toolbar, only the level you select appears and everything else goes away. HOW COOL???? haha. Check it out, if you too have a secret nerdy side.

K-Rod Introduced - To Wear #75

Well since I'm bored I just thought I'd mention to all of you that K-Rod was introduced today by the Mets. He is set to wear number 75 next season...God, how much longer do I have to wait until the season starts.

Endy Chavez - A Tribute

Today is my birthday. I have many things to be thankful for: K-Rod becoming a Met, the many warm wishes from my fabulous friends and family, my Giants clinching the NFC East, college basketball is in full swing, and yet I can’t help but feel a little empty. This would be due to the fact that I found out when I woke up this morning that my favorite Met in recent history had been traded to the Seattle Mariners.

Endy Chavez was an unsung hero in his 3 seasons as a Met. Chavez made one of the most miraculous catches in the history of baseball at Shea Stadium, when he robbed Cardinals’ third baseman Scott Rolen of a homerun in game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. After such a spectacular play, Chavez had the awareness to launch the ball to the cutoff man Jose Valentin, and double up Jim Edmonds at first base to end the inning.

It is noted in the anoles of baseball history as simply “The Catch”. The score was tied 1-1 and a homerun would have been an insurmountable dagger as the Mets could not hit Jeff Weaver if he was throwing beach balls underhand from four feet away. Consequently enough, the catch was in vain as the Mets lost the game, the series, and the season in a fashion in which only they can consistently recreate.

Chavez continued to excel defensively during his tour of duty in Queens, and despite his hitting style, almost always seemed to come up with the big hit in crucial stages of important games. Chavez will truly be missed by the Met faithful, especially yours truly.

My last memory of Endy in a Met uniform will always be a pleasant one. In the season finale, and last game ever played at Shea Stadium, Endy was put in as a defensive replacement in left field when a rocket off the bat of Jorge Cantu in a tie ballgame threatened to end the Mets season earlier than anticipated. Chavez sprinted back to the same familiar left field wall, leapt up and made another incredible catch to end the inning. I have never been to a sporting event that was louder than Shea after Chavez made that catch. The stadium erupted in a chant of ENDY CHAVEZ (clap clap clap clap clap!!!) for what seemed like forever. It gave me goose bumps then, and recalling it still gives me goose bumps today, despite the unfortunate outcome of the game, and the season for the Metsies.

This was a move that management had to make to consider the future of the franchise. We are proactively taking steps to solidify our bullpen despite giving up our most consistent reliever last season, Joe Smith. NOT AARON HEILMAN!! I will, however, miss the opportunity to boo Heilman after games as he would drive away, ashamed of his behavior, in his silver Audi Q7 SUV. I am glad Heilman is going as far away from Queens as any other location in the 48 states. So to Aaron I say goodbye to bad rubbish.

Joe Smith on the other hand, I believe I speak for all of us at the LLR and say you will be missed…Some for different reasons than others.

I wish Endy, and Joe all the best of luck in Seattle, and look forward to one day having you guys come to Citi-Field for a warm reception. May a prosperous career follow you to Seattle, or wherever you may end up.

Sayonara Heilman

It's late and I am delirious but this could not go down without me making comment.

Aaron Heilman is gone from the NY Mets. That collective sigh of relief just got louder as the Metropolitans acquire All-Star JJ Putz from the Mariners.

The deal was a three team trade where the Mets sent away Heilman, Endy Chavez (which I am sure Action is mourning on today...HIS BIRTHDAY! Send him some love.), and a few farm team prospects. In a move I am not sure about, Joe Smith will serve his duties next year in the Cleveland Indians pen.

Smith wasn't the best (though also not the worst), but he sure was sexy. I am now making a public plea to Omar to keep improving the roster but not to neglect the sexiness.

Wow.

Phillie Phans Should Get Used to Seeing This

Nick, If Daniel Jumped Off A Bridge, Would You Do The Same?

According to Dan Graziano at the Star Ledger, the Mets have another slight problem on their hands:

Mets outfielder Nick Evans had an MRI on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery and was diagnosed with what the team described as a "mild quadriceps strain of the right knee"(sic). The Mets said Evans suffered the injury while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico (he last played on Nov. 19) and would undergo three-to-four weeks of therapy at home in Phoenix in preparation for spring training.

While the Mets Parade at LLR isn't too concerned about these injuries affecting the upcoming '09 season, we couldn't help but chuckle just a little bit. Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans have quickly emerged as the Mets new butt buddies. (We hope they stay from the kinds of activities that other Mets' BBs have enjoyed... a la D Dubs and Jose Reyes.)

Daniel and Nick might need a trial separation until they learn they don't have to have the same injuries to be besties. Be a leader, not a follower, Nicky.

Boogie... I Hope You're Sitting Down

According to Jon Neyman at SI.com:

There are indications the Mets might consider overhauling their catching situation. While the Mets haven't spoken publicly about any dissatisfaction with their tandem of Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro, some competing executives say the Mets, whose top priorities remain a closer and a starting pitcher, appear open to trading either catcher.

Should the Mets find a deal for their catchers, longtime Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, a free agent, could be a possibility for them. Mets GM Omar Minaya has always liked Ivan Rodriguez, but it isn't known whether they'd consider I-Rod, as well.

Ummm... yeah. Just saying. Let's get him and keep him til Mauer's contracts expires in 2010! We could use some good solid catching in Queens.

As We Speak

Michael "Big Pelf" Pelfrey is in Wichita taking the plunge.

Pelfrey on proposing:

We were on a vacation to Jamaica. Had a great dinner, a little wine, and I said, "Hey let's go for a walk on the beach." Going through it, and asking, it's kind of a little nerve-wracking; it's a lot easier to go out and pitch in front of 50,000 people than propose.

We somewhat congratulate him and his beautiful bride, Angela. Sort of. Really at least a little bit.

Not Again...D Murph Down

Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog.com has a post up about how Daniel Murphy has suffered a right knee sprain and will be in New York this week for a precautionary MRI. My thoughts go out to D-Murph and hope to see him at CitiField on Opening Day! (I don't have tickets yet, but I will be there.)

Murphy Ineligible For 09 Rookie of the Year

According to Marty Noble of MLB.com, Daniel Murphy has used up his 'rookie' status for the award. According to the rules, if a player has 130+ at bats in a single season he can not be considered for the award the next year. Since Murphy pinch hit in the final game of the season giving him 130 ABs on the year, he is ineligible for the award next year. Had he walked during that at bat, he would still be eligible.

Lincecum Takes Home the NL Cy Young Award

Photobucket

In only his second major league season, San Francisco Giant Tim Lincecum was awarded today with the NL Cy Young. Lincecum is only the second Giant to ever win the top honors in pitching.

And while there is no denying that Tim took it to the house this season and everyone knows I love when the youth show them how it's done, I need to address a topic that has been beaten to the ground this year. That's right, NY Mets bullpen, step on down because I have a few more words for you.

Schoenweiss, Heilman, Feliciano you sonofabitch, and all the rest of you (and I will exempt Joe Smith here)... You screwed up our season, you blew our playoff hopes and you made us look silly to the rest of the league. Fine. We already talked about that and you are forgiven as long as you do not come back next year bringing that same BS. I am trying to not sit around crying over spilled milk, but you guys do not make it easy.

Johan Santana, an ABSOLUTELY viable Cy Young candidate, finished the 2008 season with a record of 16-7 and an ERA of 2.53. WHAT ABOUT THOSE NUMBERS DOESN'T ADD UP? How does a man who often goes into the 8th or even 9th inning with an ERA that low and a frequent starter (at least a game or 2 EVERY WEEK) have a shameful looking record like that? Based on games where he gave up 3 or less earned runs, Johan's record should read 28-4.

TWENTY EIGHT AND FOUR.

I hate to harp on it, but it burns me up. The man gave us and you, bullpen, quality start after quality start. 4 days after throwing a career high 125 pitches in 6 innings against the Cubs, Johan laid down the law against the Marlins and pitched a complete game victory against them just to keep our playoff hopes alive. 4 days later, the man underwent surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. He still BROUGHT IT when he should have been in the hospital. And how do you repay him, bullpen? By blowing the final game of the season (which is par for the course) and dashing all the hope that Johan worked so hard to give us.

And now this. While it is arguable that even with a solid bullpen, Lincecum may have still taken the award over Santana, it sure doesn't seem likely. But I guess we will never know.

If it's any consolation, boys, I am sure Timmy Boy is a huge fan of yours today.

Say It Ain't So, Pelf!

Today begins the countdown to what we can only imagine will be a sad and devastating day in the history of the Ladies Locker Room... the pending nuptials of our man, Mike Pelfrey.

While we are beyond ecstatic at Big Pelf's happiness and love and joy, we can't help but mourn the loss of another good man. A great man. A true New York Metropolitan.

But really, Mike... congratulations. We are so happy for you. I mean, just look at our reactions when we heard the news.

Sigh... count it down with us and feel free to send shots of your elation to this wondrous news.

David Wright Can't Stand the Phillies Either

Photobucket

Looks like our beloved D Dubs is working overtime to get back on the good side of the LLR and we are fully OK with that. David has gone on record aimed at Jimmy Rollins, saying "We don't like you guys either." Take that and bite on it Rollins.

Newsday quotes David with the following.

"I don't like those guys," Wright said. "I know they don't like us. There are
guys that I respect on that team. I respect them, but that doesn't necessarily
mean that I'm going to be friends with them. My whole career, I've tried to stay
away from that. I'll shake somebody's hand and say hello, but I'm not going to
be buddy-buddy with anyone before the game."

Teehee. Welcome back, honey. We missed you.

Mets Defense Improves

The players on the corners for the Mets are known for a couple of things. David Wright is known for his slick fielding and throwing bullets over to first basemen Carlos Delgado. Delgado, himself, is known for hitting bombs in ballparks across America. Now the two are taking the euphemism to a literal extent. Delgado has been spotted in Chinatown buying bombs…well not really, but both did apply for a permit to carry a firearm. I guess they are sick of heckling Met fans taking out their frustrations of back-to-back collapses.
Sources say both were denied of the permit to carry firearms, but were granted permission to keep handguns at their multi-million dollar apartments, Wright in the Flatiron District, and Delgado on the Upper East Side. Best put…do not try to break into their homes. These guys can do some serious damage with a bat, but are now even more dangerous than before.

Gets to call herself the girlfriend of Nick Evans.

From an interview with Daniel Murphy

Are Nick and you still inseparable, since he lives in Phoenix?

“No. We’ve taken a sabbatical from each other. He’s hanging out with his girlfriend, getting ready for Puerto Rico, probably resting up. I’ve talked to him through text a little bit. I haven’t seen him once. I’m sure we’ll get enough of each other as soon as we get to Puerto Rico and then spring training.”

Le sigh.
