Gators Take Down The Sooners

I bet my boyfriend David Lee is happy today. His alma mater, University of Florida, won their second BCS National Championship in three years last night, taking down the University of Oklahoma and 2008 Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford. I only watched the final quarter of the game, but I caught the brilliant interception by Ahmad Black that pretty much sealed the game for Florida.

Florida's famed QB, 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, is going to be a star in the NFL but will he enter this year's draft or go back to Florida for his senior season? The same question is being asked of Sam Bradford, who is a red-shirt sophomore at Oklahoma. The deadline for non-seniors to declare for the NFL draft is less than a week away on January 15th, so we won't have to wait long for the answers. Whatever move these hotties want to make is fiiiiiiine by me :)

Yeah, wow.

Kicking Ass

Sitting around watching playoff football with Action, I found myself in the midst of a heated debate. No, not about potential outcomes or the skillsets of various teams defenders. Rather, I found myself bickering with Action about just who I thought amongst various sports could kick his ass (Michael Strahan, Nikolai Zherdev, Elijah Dukes) and who could not (Michael Phelps, Terry Bradshaw, Tim Lincecum).

This discussion led to an even more intense and pressing question. When posed with various matchups, who would really come out kicking ass?

And yes, now that you ask, I did spend two hours working on this post only to lose the entire text, so you are getting the dumbed down version. And the first one to complain will compete against my feisty white ass in a grudge match.

Terry Bradshaw vs. Jimmy Johnson

Terry Bradshaw played with Lawrence Taylor against Married With Children's Al Bundy in the infamous Pink Ladies bowl, where Bradshaw actually fell victim to the football prowess of Bundy. It was perhaps only the second victory in Bundy's sad life. Johnson walks through the world with a crazy glint in his eyes, probably leftover from coaching the evil early '90s Dallas Cowboys dynasty.

Edge: Terry Bradshaw. Despite the psychotic stare of Johnson, Bradshaw actually played professional football. And plus, Bundy was probably due a victory.

Chris Berman vs. Linda Cohn

Yes, we are all about girl power here at the LLR. However, when it comes to grudge matches, the men usually walk away victorious, unless it's a brute of a woman like Roseanne Barr or Kathy Bates.

Edge: Linda Cohn. Unless the Swami can predict what this former college hockey player's next move is gonna be, Linda will take him to the mat.

Mike Tirico vs. Tony Kornheiser

Kornheiser spends every season emotionally beating up on Mike Tirico. So will Tirico unleash the rage of the season on Kornheiser or will the spotlight stealing Tony not allow himself to lose in a public forum?

Edge: Tirico. His rage is too much for any man to handle and plus he outweighs Kornheiser by about 80 pounds. And when was the last time a crotchety old Jew emerged victorious in a grudge match?

Mike Lupica vs. Jim Rome

This is probably an unfair matchup as Mike Lupica is 100% worthless, but I would pay good money to the charity of Jim Rome's choice to watch him kick the tar out of Mike Lupica.

Edge: Jim Rome. Lupica is garbage and Jim Rome is, well, burning. And plus he bears a slight resemblance to Keith Hernandez and any resemblance, no matter how vague, gives one supreme ass kicking powers.

Scott Boras vs. Donald Trump

This is probably an example of two of humankind's worst specimens. In a dream world, they would both go down in this fight, but that ain't likely to happen. In my head the fight goes as such: Boras comes to the ring with A-Rod in his corner. When he starts winning, Trump pulls the "I'm afraid your friend A-Rod is actually my friend A-Rod" line from Casino Royale. A-Rod then gives Boras a stone cold stunner for a Trump victory.

Edge: The Donald. After nearly destroying the careers of Alex Rodriguez and Scott Boras and really wrecking the magic of baseball, Boras doesn't have much of a posse left. And these two men are far to sneaky to fight on their own.

Phillie Phanatic vs. Stanford Tree

The Phillie Phanatic is known for his brawling. He has picked fights with David Wright, random fans and even members of his own team. He never backs down and is always ready to hand someone their ass. The Stanford Tree is a fricking tree... even though Stanford's team is known as the Cardinals.

Edge: Stanford Tree. There is no logical explanation for this other than we don't let the Fightin' Phils win a single match around here.

Syracuse Orangeman vs. Dick Vitale

Dick is the college basketball staple, quite possibly because he has been around since good ole' James Naismith first hooked up that peach basket. He may be 135 years old, but he hasn't lost a single step. Though the Orangeman is a big pile of citrus fruit, and no one likes getting citrus in the eye.

Edge: Dick Vitale. Despite the Orangeman's hulking presence, he is essentially a big inflated balloon. Dickie V's high-pitched screams have taken down much bigger targets.

George Steinbrenner vs. Hank Steinbrenner

Here's another matchup where I would be all too delighted to watch both fighters take a dive. Shifty a-hole vs. shifty a-hole.

Edge: George. Hank is nothing if not a not exactly poor man's George. His dad would his ass and then sell the broadcast rights on pay per view for the low bargain price of $180 million over 8 years.

Barack Obama vs. Coach K.

Coach K's main asset is his vicious temper, but the cool demeanor of Barack is enough to calm just about anyone. Barack has also taken down a POW in Vietnam, so Barack, who is just "a little too awesome", should have no problem with Coach K.

Edge: Barack

'Nuff said.

Oklahoma State Cowboy vs. Plaxico Burress

Plaxico Burress is a big, badass football player who is known for crushing anyone in his path. The Oklahoma State Cowboy is most likely some computer science major who is scared of his own shadow.

Edge: Oklahoma State Cowboy. The biggest threat to Plax is Plax himself, so even if he was fighting my grandmother, she would probably emerge victorious. And plus, the OK Cowboy is actually allowed to carry his weapon in public.

Alex Rodriguez vs. Derek Jeter

I feel that this is a matchup that has already occurred, most likely when there was only one tanning bed left at Hollywood Tans. These two gents are essentially the same person to me, except that one has Madonna and her man muscles in his corner and the other has only little Minka Kelly.

Edge: Alex Rodriguez. If my tanning bed theory holds any water, A-Rod is infinitely more orange than Jeter. That says to me he has already won Rounds 1-10.

Alicia Sacramone vs. Chuck Liddell

Little girl gymnast vs. Ultimate Fighting Champion. Sounds simple enough, until you watch this:

Edge: Alicia Sacramone. Despite the obvious difference in experience and size, Chuck has a thing for the ladies and all Alicia really has to do is get one good punch off.

Alexander Semin is a Little Bitch

No, this isn't D2 The Mighty Ducks; however, does the NHL need to implement a new penalty for BITING?! If you think Sean Avery is bad, then what is fellow pest of the NHL Jarkko Ruutu? Is he trying to de-throne the inactive Avery as the NHLs most hated player? (He already surpasses him on my list, frankly.)

I'm sure someone on your favorite team has had to deal with the likes of this - (pardon my lack of a better and more politically correct word) - "jerk" on many occasions. Well, he just took it up a notch in what I don't think I have ever heard of in sports, except in the Mike Tyson incident, by BITING an opponent!

Adding fuel to the rivalry between the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators, Ruutu proceeded to bite Andrew Peters when they were having an altercation in the first period of tonights game. (Maybe he was looking for a snack? He might have missed his pre-game lunch this afternoon.....) Anyway, so it was his finger and Peters had his glove on, but even so - are you kidding me? Ruutu claims that Peters was gouging his eyes out. This "altercation" seems to be a bit three stoogies for me, but Peters is the one with a bandaged finger and Ruutu can still see perfectly fine.

Ladies and Gents, this is hockey and we are not afraid to kick ass or throw down, but - BITING!? That's just a little foul. I think someone should knock Jarkko Ruutu out R.J Umberger style. (kidding. I'm not that mean.) ...but I would not mind him being put in his place a bit more...

In any event, the Buffalo Sabres took home the game, 4-2! Hats off to the first star of the game, Derek Roy, for stepping it up and yet again, getting another game winner. After being publicly called out less than a week ago with other teammates by head coach Lindy Ruff, Roy has responded with 3G and 4A in his last 3 games. He now leads the league in GWG with seven, 2 of which were in the last 3 games. Nice Job Royzie.

Sidney Crosby should invest in scuba equipment because he was doing a far better job at diving than scoring goals last night. On the other hand if there is one sole reason why Crosby couldn't muster up more than some PIMs it was none other than King Henrik!

With a stellar performance in goal, and help from his teammates to finally connect on the power play, Henrik Lundqvist shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0. And if that wasn't enough to prove why he is one of the best in the League and should be in Montreal at the All-Star game later this month, check out the following article in Page Six Magazine on the man himself. Twins Owner Carl Pohad Passes Away At 93

Billionaire Carl Pohad, owner of the Minnesota Twins, passed away in his home Monday at the ripe old age of 93.

Besides just being the owner of my surrogate second baseball team, Carl was regarded as an incredible philanthropist and a true rags to riches story. He grew up a member of a poor family during the Great Depression and later rose to rank number 102 on Forbes rich bastards list.

According to MLB:

"Since the day Carl Pohlad entered Major League Baseball, he made significant contributions to our game," Commissioner Bud H. Selig said in a written statement. "He has been a true leader in our sport for the past 25 years. His devotion to the Minnesota Twins, the Twin Cities and Major League Baseball was remarkable.

"In my long career, I have never met a more loyal and caring human being. We will miss Carl and all of baseball joins me in sending our deepest condolences to the Pohlad family for the loss of our friend and partner."

He remains in our thoughts here at the LLR. Here's to hoping the Twins give us something soon that doesn't require our thoughts and prayers, but perhaps a victory dance in honor of Carl instead!

NFL Playoffs: A Focus on Impact Players

As the NFL playoffs begin, the chase for the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy grows in intensity. In these playoffs there will be many things to watch for, yet few things to truly appreciate. My focus for this series is to highlight a couple of individuals who have inspired myself, and have a profound ability to change the outcomes of important football games.

I will start with an unlikely, and unsung hero who has essentially lifted his team into the divisional round of the playoffs. He has taken a large role in forcing the mighty Indianapolis Colts to pack up their jock straps, lick their wounds, and watch the rest of the playoffs on television. I am referring of course to the shortest player in the NFL, San Diego Chargers running back, Darren Sproles.

Sproles is listed at 5'6", and if he really is 5'6", I am 6'5". Darren grew up in northeast Iowa in a town called Waterloo, which is known for its John Deere Tractor factory. Waterloo, however, has had one other NFL player reside in it. Former Miami Dolphins punter, and legend, Reggie Robie.

I feel like Darren has inspired all those who were told that they were too short to make it to the big time. Sproles was the 130th pick in the 2005 draft, and is a backup running back to LaDanian Tomlinson. Darren has had to overcome many adversities just to be in the position he is. He has made the most of his chances and most recently ran for 105 yards, and two game altering touchdowns against the NFL's hottest team, the Colts. In lieu Darren's efforts I feel the entire idea a success story is a possibility, and not a fairy tale. Thank you Darren for putting into perspective the belief that no matter if you think you can, or you can not, you are always right.

My Number One Man Has A BooBoo

In what the Twins mouthpieces are referring to as a minor procedure, my very favorite boyfriend Joe Mauer has undergone surgery to remove a kidney obstruction. He apparently will be all set to join spring training for pitchers and catchers next month.

Based on my research, this looks like it could potentially be a little scary, but our thoughts and prayers are with Joe during his recovery time... as if my thoughts ever lie anywhere else.

Matt Ryan Named AP's Offensive ROY

While I didn't think that he would be as effective as he was when the Falcons drafted him, Matt Ryan has turned this team around. While he did have tremendous help from Michael Turner, Ryan had a solid year completing 61% of his passes while throwing 16 TDs and just 11INTs. Congrats, Matt!

Help Wanted:: NFL

It seems like just yesterday when every team in the NFL had a coach (or at least an interm-49ers & Raiders) and yet today there are four head coaching vacancies. I am also certain that there will be more firings in the weeks to come.

While his record (23-25) during his three years in New York may not show it, Eric Mangini, apparently was not the man for the job. After finishing second in his division his first year as head coach, Mangini has led his team to two consecutive third place finishes.

Owners will usually forgive a bad first season (unless they are Al Davis) but if you're getting progressively worse, you're going to end up fired.

This is also the reason why both Romeo Crennel and Rod Marinelli were fired. Crennel led the Browns to their best season in years just last season, but finishing this year 4-12 and with the team in turmoil it was time for a new face in Cleveland. And while Marinelli could push some of the blame off on to former Lions GM Matt Millen, if you can't win a game, I'm sorry but you're not going to be coaching next year.

This leads me to suggest who else I think will be looking for new coaches next year:

Kansas City Chiefs
Like I said above, you can not keep a coach who gets progessively worse. The Chiefs have gone under Herm Edwards from 9-7 his first season to just 2-13 this year.

Cincinatti Bengals
I believe that the Bengals may give Marvin Lewis another chance becasue of Carson Palmer missing most of this year. He has not done anything in recent years to change the attitude of the team. They need some fresh blood in there.

St. Louis Rams
Not only does their head coach need to go, but Marc Bulger needs to get lost. The Rams have not been as successful under him as they have hoped, and well it's time to move on.

Sidenote: Congratulations to Coach Mike Singletary on becoming the Head Coach of the 49ers after yesterdays win!!

Time To Pack Manny

Looks like the Dodgers are tired of playing the waiting game with Manny Ramirez. Sources say that the Dodgers have made an offer to Adam Dunn, which leads me to believe that if Dunn signs they aren't goign to shell out the 45 mil over 2 seasons that they originally offered.

The interesting thing is that the teams who have the cash to spend on Manny, have either spent it on other players (Phillies - Ibanez | Yankees - Texeria) or simply have no interest in Manny (Cubs, Mets, Red Sox [now that would be comical]).

Will Manny have to settle for a one year deal, and really just shut up and play this year?

Manny was quoted just after the season as saying something along the lines of 'gas is going up and so am I'. Well Manny, unless you haven't noticed gas prices have dropped and yours will have to as well.

Now I See The Light

I never knew what all the fuss was about with respect to UFC. I'd seen a match or two in passing, but mixed martial arts never appealed to me in general. I'm back home in Virginia for the holidays, and I dropped in on some friends last night. They were getting wasted and watching the pay-per-view UFC fights. I had a few shots, some chips, some dip, and I actually paid attention to the fights as well. The result? I have a new found respect for the MMA AND (as you probably guessed) I have a new boyfriend.

Ladies, allow me to introduce Frank Mir.

OH.HELL.YES. How beautiful is he?? He walked into the ring and I screamed in ecstasy. Damn, my new boyfriend is sexy!

UFC - you officially have my attention! The men were so tasty I can't remember how many times I yelled "GET HIM BABY, GET HIM!" I had a new "baby" in every match. How come no one ever told me what I was missing???? Look for more UFC coverage on Ladies Locker Room in the future, for sure!

Oh yeah, in addition to being sexy, Frank Mir won his match last night against Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, knocking him out in the second round. Mir's victory sets up a rematch with Brock Lesner for the UFC Heavyweight Championship in 2009. I almost forgot to mention that, oops :) Sometimes I have a one track mind.

Baby Markakis On The Way

This time, the Orioles won't lose their best player to the World Baseball Classic. Right fielder Nick Markakis told The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday that he has declined an invitation to play for Team USA in next spring's Classic, a decision that mostly revolved around the impending birth of his first child.

"My first child is due on March 12, and that's right in the middle of it," Markakis told the Sun's Jeff Zrebiec. "It's definitely a big honor and something I'd like to do. But with my first kid being born, I have other responsibilities to take care of. It was a hard decision, but an easy decision.

The baby will arrive far less than 9 months after Nick's nuptials to the lovely Christina. Either way, we wish them a happy and healthy baby!

Yanks Sign Teixeira

Well, there you have it. The Mark Teixeira sweepstakes has ended and the New York Yankees walk away with the superstar free agent first baseman. All the major outlets are reporting that the Yankees have reached an 8-year deal with Teixeira worth close to $180 million. Once again, the Yankees dig into their infinitely deep pockets and leave the rest the league in the dust. First they lure C.C. Sabathia away from Los Angeles by making him an offer he couldn't refuse, then they snatch up A.J. Burnett, and now this. Believe it or not, my friends, the Yankees have spent over $400 million in the span of two weeks.

This is exactly why I'm a Mets fan. Even if I could get behind American League baseball, I don't think I could ever fully get behind the Steinbrenner Yankees. Personally, I really feel the way they manage that organization does a disservice to Major League Baseball and to the fans. Everyone knows the Yankees are almost solely responsible for MLB salaries having skyrocketed in recent years. The way they throw money around takes that little something away from the game. There's a little less magic in the Bronx. Its more like the last few rounds of monopoly, when your evil sister has hotels on Broadway and Park Place, yet she insists on buying up everything else on the board, thereby taking the fun out of the ENTIRE GAME.

Yeah. It's like that.

Baseball is about so much more than money, at least it is to me. For all the Yankees have spent in this off season, it better be worth it. I would just LOVE to watch them spend all this dough and not make the playoffs again. It would be such a sweet personal victory, however unrealistic. A girl can dream.

I'm mostly disappointed because I really wanted Teixeira to come back home to the National League, specifically with the Nationals. They wallowed at the bottom of the NL East last year, and a superstar first baseman would really have given that organization a lift. Plus, I would get to see Teixeira play the Mets several times a year, and that would have been nice. I don't make it up to Yankee Stadium much, as you can surely imagine. I'd really prefer not to hear about the Yankees any more between now and spring training either. I'm officially over it. If they sign Manny Ramirez, I'll be angry, but not surprised. Hopefully they can manage to shut the hell up for a few weeks and give me some peace.

To Texeira, Sabathia, and Burnett I say: Good luck with that.

Creepy Redneck In Child's Bedroom

So being the stupendously busy woman that I am around the holidays (aka raiding my mother's fridge and watching trash TV all day), I happened to catch an episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition last night. And what creepy ass redneck decided to show his face but Bronson Arroyo?

The family was from the Cincinnati area and they redid the son's bedroom to look like the Great American Ballpark. Already, you have to feel for the kid. They panned around his room to display all this autographed Bronson Arroyo memorabilia, when who should show up to "make this kid's day" but Bronson himself?

The boy seemed excited but I have to question the parenting skills of a mother who would allow that cougar-loving slimeball in her son's room.

Women Across America Are Gunning For Shaun Smith

Rumors have been flying around for the past few weeks that Cleveland Brown DT Shaun Smith (who I believe no one has ever heard of, including Browns' coach Romeo Crennel) took a swing at LLR's beloved Brady Quinn. While this tale had previously been dismissed, new reports from the Cleveland Sports Examiner and ProFootballTalk are coming in claiming that this story isn't the insane falsehood it was previously believed to be.

While Quinn is denying it (and what pretty boy who is desperate to be manly and tough wouldn't?), it's looking more and more likely that Quinn was on the receiving end of Smith's big fat fisticuffs. An investigation will be launched into the accuracy of this, but one thing is for sure. If the rumor is true, Shaun Smith can book a one-way plane ticket right back to Brooklyn 'cuz the Browns don't need any part of that. Smith should really have done his talking on the field.

I stand by my teams (and my boyfriends) no matter what. The Knicks aren't the Eastern Conference powerhouse they used to be, but that doesn't mean I love them any less. Since a return to glory is probably a season or two away (after we get this Stephan Marbury situation figured out, deal him out of here, and free up some salary cap space), I have to get excited about the little things. It's the small victories that are making me happy this season, like the way we took down Golden State a few weeks ago, and how we embarrassed the Grizzlies in Memphis. One game at a time.

I am also taking great joy in the fact that the Knicks are SHOCKING the fantasy basketball world right now! Allow me to quote Fantasy Writer Jeff Lippman, in an article entitled Unbe-Lee-vable.

With Christmas time and the holidays fast approaching, Mr. Fantasy implores owners not to look gift horses in the mouth. Don't take what you've been given by the grace of God and Isaiah Thomas and flush it down the toilet.

Don't follow? I'm talking, of course, about the curious case of the New York Knicks and their magical Fantasy point-producing offense under coach Mike D'Antoni. The Knicks have been the source of a number of Fantasy breakouts this season. Nobody could have predicted Chris Duhon's emergence as a top Fantasy point guard. Who ever thought Al Harrington would average 27 points per game? It would have taken a Fantasy clairvoyant to forecast the incredible leap in value made by Wilson Chandler, Tim Thomas, Quentin Richardson and Nate Robinson this year.

But with all those guys above, right now there is one Knick who is standing out from all the rest and taking the league by storm. With 16 double-doubles in his first 25 games, David Lee is third in the NBA behind only Dwight Howard and Chris Paul, which is some pretty sweet Fantasy company.

David Lee has been great lately but I keep hearing pundits express concern that playing, more specifically defending, bigger centers every night will wear on him as the season goes along -- it was unnerving to see Shaq knock him around Monday night. Is now the time to move him? Is his value is as high as it will ever get? -- Chilibon Karakachanov, New York

JL: The "pundits" you are talking about are worried because the ambidextrous Lee has been suffering from a bad back in recent days. That back problem forced Lee to finish with just 10 points and one rebound in 24 minutes on Dec. 10 at the Nets, snapping his 10-game double-double streak in the process. All Lee has done since is average almost 17 points and 15 rebounds in his last three games. Plus, in 31 minutes banging against Shaq, you say he got tossed around, we say he still recorded 15 points and 12 boards and shot 7-of-9 from the floor.

Lee is a pretty tough character and we think, for better or worse, he'll be able to stay healthy throughout this season. That said, his value is not going anywhere. He's only getting better and better in his fourth year in the league out of the University of Florida. You could certainly trade him and expect to get very good value in return, but if his unexpected value has helped you thus far there is no need to worry about it dropping off anytime soon.

JEFF LIPPMAN IS MY NEW BFF. In case you haven't heard, singing David Lee's praises is the perfect way to get on my good side. If only fantasy points were directly equivalent to NBA wins. My Knicks would be well on their way to a division title.

2008 Pro Bowl selections were announced today, and what do you know? The New York Jets lead the NFL with seven players in the Pro-Bowl including Mr. Brett Favre, who will be making his 10th Pro Bowl appearance.

The New York Football Giants will be represented by an NFC-leading six players at this year's Pro Bowl. This will be Eli Manning's first Pro Bowl, but it will be his brother Peyton's eleventh. This is the first time two brother quarterbacks will play in the same game. Check out the full NFC roster here and the AFC selections here.

I am happy to report that a Jets vs Giants match up in Superbowl XLIII is totally in the realm of possibility.

A Few Of My Favorite People

I'm watching Knicks vs. Suns right now and several of my favorite players from over years are on the floor tonight, including David Lee, Chris Duhon, Steve Nash, Shaquille O'Neil, and Grant Hill.

Chris Duhon and and Grant Hill are Duke alums, so they have my undying loyalty forever and ever amen. When Duke won its second straight NCAA Championship in '92, I wanted to be Mrs. Hill, even though I was only 10 years old. I demanded his sneakers for Christmas when they first came out. I even changed my favorite soda because "Grant Hill Drinks Sprite."

Shaq is just a legend. When he came onto the scene, I'd never seen anything like him, and he just blew my mind. He's become a superstar and a phenomenon since then. Love him or hate him, you've got to respect him no matter what.

Steve Nash became an elite NBA player under Coach Mike D'Antoni. His recent MVP seasons were electric. I'll always respect Nash and D'antoni for resurrecting basketball in Phoenix. Plus Steve Nash is Canadian, and I love me some Canadians.

I realize some of you might be getting sick of me talking about David Lee, so I'll spare you this one time. Believe that he will be the subject of a blog before the week is over. You've been warned.

Tonight is Coach Mike D'antoni's first game back in Phoenix since he left the team under less than happy circumstances last off season. He received a standing ovation from the Phoenix crowd. I think its great that they showed D'Antoni the respect he was due. I'm even more glad that he's coaching in New York now :)

I keep changing from this game over to Browns vs. Eagles on Monday Night Football. This game is about to be a blow out...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Matt Cassel and his family during this difficult time. Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he does not know if Cassel will return to the team for Sunday's game in Oakland against the Raiders. As someone who's lost a loved one quite recently, I know its not always easy to jump right back into your life. I hope he takes as much time as he needs.

Endy Chavez - A Tribute

Today is my birthday. I have many things to be thankful for: K-Rod becoming a Met, the many warm wishes from my fabulous friends and family, my Giants clinching the NFC East, college basketball is in full swing, and yet I can’t help but feel a little empty. This would be due to the fact that I found out when I woke up this morning that my favorite Met in recent history had been traded to the Seattle Mariners.

Endy Chavez was an unsung hero in his 3 seasons as a Met. Chavez made one of the most miraculous catches in the history of baseball at Shea Stadium, when he robbed Cardinals’ third baseman Scott Rolen of a homerun in game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. After such a spectacular play, Chavez had the awareness to launch the ball to the cutoff man Jose Valentin, and double up Jim Edmonds at first base to end the inning.

It is noted in the anoles of baseball history as simply “The Catch”. The score was tied 1-1 and a homerun would have been an insurmountable dagger as the Mets could not hit Jeff Weaver if he was throwing beach balls underhand from four feet away. Consequently enough, the catch was in vain as the Mets lost the game, the series, and the season in a fashion in which only they can consistently recreate.

Chavez continued to excel defensively during his tour of duty in Queens, and despite his hitting style, almost always seemed to come up with the big hit in crucial stages of important games. Chavez will truly be missed by the Met faithful, especially yours truly.

My last memory of Endy in a Met uniform will always be a pleasant one. In the season finale, and last game ever played at Shea Stadium, Endy was put in as a defensive replacement in left field when a rocket off the bat of Jorge Cantu in a tie ballgame threatened to end the Mets season earlier than anticipated. Chavez sprinted back to the same familiar left field wall, leapt up and made another incredible catch to end the inning. I have never been to a sporting event that was louder than Shea after Chavez made that catch. The stadium erupted in a chant of ENDY CHAVEZ (clap clap clap clap clap!!!) for what seemed like forever. It gave me goose bumps then, and recalling it still gives me goose bumps today, despite the unfortunate outcome of the game, and the season for the Metsies.

This was a move that management had to make to consider the future of the franchise. We are proactively taking steps to solidify our bullpen despite giving up our most consistent reliever last season, Joe Smith. NOT AARON HEILMAN!! I will, however, miss the opportunity to boo Heilman after games as he would drive away, ashamed of his behavior, in his silver Audi Q7 SUV. I am glad Heilman is going as far away from Queens as any other location in the 48 states. So to Aaron I say goodbye to bad rubbish.

Joe Smith on the other hand, I believe I speak for all of us at the LLR and say you will be missed…Some for different reasons than others.

I wish Endy, and Joe all the best of luck in Seattle, and look forward to one day having you guys come to Citi-Field for a warm reception. May a prosperous career follow you to Seattle, or wherever you may end up.

Sayonara Heilman

It's late and I am delirious but this could not go down without me making comment.

Aaron Heilman is gone from the NY Mets. That collective sigh of relief just got louder as the Metropolitans acquire All-Star JJ Putz from the Mariners.

The deal was a three team trade where the Mets sent away Heilman, Endy Chavez (which I am sure Action is mourning on today...HIS BIRTHDAY! Send him some love.), and a few farm team prospects. In a move I am not sure about, Joe Smith will serve his duties next year in the Cleveland Indians pen.

Smith wasn't the best (though also not the worst), but he sure was sexy. I am now making a public plea to Omar to keep improving the roster but not to neglect the sexiness.

Reports are in that Sabathia has turned down the Yankees 6 year deal. Yankees fans and personnel have no concept of how anyone would not want to play in the Bronx. They feel it's a high esteem and honor to play within that organization.

And while I understand that everyone feels that way about their own ballclub, to that i say... really, Yanks? I understand and appreciate the history that comes with being a part of the Yankees franchise, I do. But coming off a year where they not only didn't win the World Series or even make the playoffs, they were also out of the playoffs practically in April. That makes me wonder, why is it such an honor? What makes playing for the 2009 Yankees a better opportunity than playing for the Washington Nationals?

As it stands, sticking with the Brew Crew seems to be the direction CC is headed, but the Giants remain confident that they will start '09 with Sabathia on the mound.

The Legendary Greg Maddux Announces His Retirement

We all knew it was coming, but that doesn't make it sting any less. One of the greatest pitchers of all time is hanging up his glove. Greg Maddux announced his retirement at the opening of MLB's Winter Meetings in Las Vegas today. Maddux ends a storied career full of highlights and awards including 4 NL Cy Young Awards, 18 Golden Glove Awards, including one for every season from 1990-2008 except 2003, 8 All-Star seasons, and a World Series Championship with the Atlanta Braves in 1995.

I will never forget watching Greg Maddux dominate the NL East the 90s. TBS was included in our basic cable package, so the Braves were always on. I wanted to dislike Maddux, but I never could. He was just TOO good to hate. The fact that he's remained not only relevant, not only competitive, but CONSISTENT in 23 major league seasons is a testament to his impeccable talent. I will always admire Greg Maddux's passion for the game, and the way he could control a pitch like no one else.

Latest News: Knicks F/C David Lee had 19 rebounds in Sunday's game against Detroit, giving him nine straight double-doubles. He has had no less than 11 rebounds in any of those games.(Updated 12/08/2008).

Fantasy Analysis: Lee has seen a significant increase in rebounds and scoring since the team traded Zach Randolph away and he's becoming an elite Fantasy center in the process. Right now, there is no reason he should not be starting in any league, even in three-game weeks.

CBSsports is reporting that a US Circuit Court Judge has blocked the NFL from suspending Kevin Williams and Pat Williams of the Vikings and Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister and Will Smith of the Saints this Sunday. The judge needs more time to go through all the evidence, and in the meantime, the boys can play.

Vikings DTs cleared to play: A federal judge on Friday blocked the NFL from suspending five players for violating the league's anti-doping policy. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson said he needed more time to consider the case after hearing several hours of arguments from the league and the NFL Players Association. Kevin Williams and Pat Williams of the Vikings and Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister and Will Smith of the Saints were suspended this week for four games each for testing positive for a banned diuretic in the dietary supplement StarCaps. The union argued the NFL didn't properly inform players about the substance. The NFL's attorneys argued that that claim, and others, had been considered and rejected in a process set out by the league's collective bargaining agreement.

Hmmmmm. Sounds a little strange to me, but whatever. I do have the Vikings D starting on my fantasy roster this week :D

The NHL has just announced that Sean Avery will serve a six-game suspension, without pay, for off-ice comemnts made to the media before the Dallas/Calgary game on December 2nd. Having already served two games, he will be able to return to the ice on December 16th when the Stars face the Phoenix Coyotes, pending any further punishment from his current team.

In addition, Avery has agreed to an anger-managment evaluation. Hmmm...interesting.

I don't find this suspension appropriate, but Mr. Bettman has ruled. If there is one thing for sure, this is not the last of Sean Avery. As they say, "Nobody puts baby in a corner.."

Sean Avery arrived in stellar fashion at the NHL offices in New York today. Ever so elusive in his demeanor with dark shades, Avery met with Commissioner Gary Bettman, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and Senior Executive VP Colie Campbell who will rule on his loose comments about former girlfriends and their current hockey beaus.

Sean Avery was never punished last year for his entertaining incidents with Marty Brodeur, though the league did implement a new rule to prohibit the conduct he displayed from ever happening again. (I must admit, I was at the game and it was mildly entertaining.) He’s never been reprimanded for any of his comments. He's run his mouth at referees, opposing players, former teammates (hell, current teammates) coaches, broadcasters, and even fans. He was never more than thrown in the box or thrown out of a game for provoking opponents, fighting rivals or simply stirring things up.

Avery has never been suspended in his seven year career as a professional hockey player. Despite by-Law 17 and Article 6 of the league constitution that covers conduct "detrimental to the league or game of hockey", no player has ever been suspended for comments made off-ice until now.

I will say this, there have been far worse incidents this hockey season (Jarkko Ruutu, anyone?) than the comment that came from this infamous bad boy's mouth. If one thing is clear, the League and its' officials should rule on each case scenario for what it's worth. So Avery was never suspended prior, but should be have been? Maybe so. But is this incident grounds for suspension? I don't think it is.

I also find it a bit more interesting that the country of Canada isn't out to void him as a citizen! "I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada." I find that the most comical part of his statement because, lets be real here, everyone knows how much Sean Avery HATES Canada. Furthermore, Dion and Jarrett ARE dating his exes.... right? Asshole comment, yes. Worthy of a league wide, or double-digit suspension? Absolutely not.

His comments, while rousing, may have been inappropriate. So, fine him. This offseason, Avery was looking for a bigger dollar meal ticket and a long term deal -and he got it. The Dallas Stars, who signed Avery to a 4 year, $15.5 million dolllar contract with this summer, will decide on further repercussions after hearing what the league rules. In the end, the team may get the raw end of the deal. They have expressed no interest in hearing an apology or rectifying the wounds they feel Avery has caused to their team and organization. He could get traded. He could be put on waivers. He may be exiled to the minors. Time will tell.

As of now, Gary Bettman has yet to make a ruling on Avery's fate. He was quoted during his XM radio show as saying, "We had a hearing with Sean Avery this morning which was well chronicled by the media. Off the bat, what I need to say is I haven't made a decision yet. I want to take the opportunity to think about what transpired at the meeting, everything I was told and needs to be considered. I want to reflect on it, which means either sometime later this afternoon or tomorrow morning we will render a decision and I will make it public."

In yet another attempt to disperse the tension between Boogie and Suth, and to diminish some of the overwhelming attention to the Plaxico Burress popping a cap in own ass chronicle, I proudly present my name of the week. As we all know I have a knack for selecting players with extensive legal problems (and no, Plaxico will not be this week's recipient ). This week I have chosen someone with a clean criminal record right now. In a shocking upset, this week's winner of the NFL's name of the week is Rex Hadnot of the Cleveland Browns.

This 325 offensive lineman looks like a real sweetheart, and has no pending criminal charges that I know of. His name also looks completely ridiculous on the back of his jersey. Ridicularity is the essence of this award. So congrats to Rex Hadnot...the award comes to the dawg pound. I have much love for the Browns, but the harsh reality is this may be the only award going to Cleveland this football season.

Nets Courtside (Dec. 2)

I wasn't technically "courtside" but I was like 5 rows behind the Nets bench for last night's spanking against the Wizards. Anyway, while I really am not a true Nets fan or a basketball fan in general, I thought the game was rather...ummm HORRIBLE. I did, however, take a couple of things away from the game:

1. Unlike when the Mets or Yankees are having a bad season, Nets fans come out and show their support:
This picture was taken late in the game, but that didn't matter much. I've been to high school sporting events that have drawn bigger crowds.

2. Vince Carter loves the bench. For someone who is his team's best player, VC sure did spend a whole lot of times in the second half sulking on the bench. Now I don't know if this was his fault or Lawrence Frank's but when you're only down by 10 you don't pull your BEST player from the game.

3. Speaking of Lawrence Frank, he ummm....does NOT have the respect of his players. And first of all, I don't blame them he stinks. Frank was calling out things from the bench and both Devin Harris and Vince Carter would ignore him/do what he said half heartedly. I probably wouldn't listen if my coach was a leprechaun either...

He's like 5'5 TOPS.

NFL Players with Guns

Here's a different perspective on the issue. I've got so many mixed feelings about all of this, its hard to keep things straight or even develop a real opinion! To that end, I want to bring you all as much information as possible so you decided how you feel about it all.

We all remember the Sean Taylor tragedy from almost exactly a year ago, and the outpouring of emotion around the NFL. It has been said that Sean Taylor would be alive if he had a gun that day. It has also been said that Sean Taylor would be alive if NO ONE had a gun that day.

I visited McFaddens on 42nd Street and 2nd Avenue last Sunday, and I had a great conversation with Alex, a Bill's fan. She echoed the sentiment that life as a superstar athlete isn't always as glamorous as it looks on television. These guys deal are often seen as targets. Some of them come from rocky backgrounds in violent places. Like it or not, many NFL players do feel the need to carry weapons. Why they don't feel the need to legally register these weapons is beyond me.

Sean Avery Suspended Indefinitely

The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars' winger Sean Avery indefinitely due to some remarks he made before Tuesday's game against the Calgary Flames, insulting the Flames' Dion Phaneuf. Phaneuf is currently dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, hockey whore Elisha Cuthbert.

Avery told TSN on camera that, "I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

The league's suspension is legal under Article 6 of the NHL Constitution. It allows for suspension due to any conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey." As for Avery, he'll be meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman before a final decision is made on his suspension.

Wow. I am kind of torn about this hockey happening. While there is a huge part of me that thinks certain other leagues could learn from this kind of crackdown (*cough*NFL*cough), I am not really entirely sure that the punishment fits the crime. Sure, Avery is the quintessential hockey bad boy and his latest smack talk does make the NHL resemble the WWE, but an indefinite suspension?? And frankly, Phaneuf did break off a piece of Avery's sloppy seconds anyway. Perhaps it would have been more gentlemanly to shut the hell up, but that's not why we love Avery. The NHL needs the help in marketing and bringing the game to a larger audience, so why punish one of the league's more colorful personnel?

Plaxico Burress SUSPENDED

We all knew this was coming.

Plax has been suspended by the Giants for the final four games of the regular season, AND they placed him on the non-football injury list - which means he can not play in the postseason either.

The team physician examined Plaxico today and told the Giants that he gunshot would sideline the wide receiver for 4-6 six weeks anyway.

Wow - I don't know what to say. As a Giants fan, I'm VERY sad that all of this happening in the first place. I'm glad Plaxico is physically OK, and that no one else was hurt. The law is the law, and the state of New York will handle it from here.

From a football perspective, I'm sad to see Plax end his season this way. In so many ways, the Giants are a better team this year than they were last season. I've definitely been having fantasies of a Superbowl repeat. And to be COMPLETELY honest, I think we can still do it without Plaxico. Honestly, last season he played hurt every single game. This season he's been riddled with fines, suspensions, and injuries. I feel like he's been less a part of the team for a while now. The 11-1 record has definitely a team effort, and I really believe everyone will continue to pull together in Plaxico's absence. This team is SO tough, mentally and physically. Certain guys are really going to step up to the plate and step into the spotlight to finish strong this season and postseason. I truly believe that.

I'm anxious (and scared to death) to see how defenses around the league will respond to this. Lord knows if Plaxico Burress is good for anything on the field, its drawing defenders!!!!! Damn it to hell.

"The NFL has suspended Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister and Will Smith of the Saints, Vikings DLs Pat Williams and Kevin Williams and Houston's Bryan Pittman for violating its steroid policy. All of these players are suspended through the end of the NFL's 2008 regular season and are eligible to return for the playoffs this year if their team advances that far. In a statement, the NFL said that "the players specifically violated a longstanding provision of the policy relating to the use of diuretics and water pills, which serve as masking agents for steroids and are potentially dangerous to the health of players. The policy states that the use of so-called 'blocking' or 'masking' agents, including diuretics and water pills, is prohibited and that a positive test will not be excused because it results from the use of a dietary supplement that unknowingly contained a banned substance. Supplements are not regulated or monitored by the government and players have been warned about the risks of supplement use."

Nick, If Daniel Jumped Off A Bridge, Would You Do The Same?

According to Dan Graziano at the Star Ledger, the Mets have another slight problem on their hands:

Mets outfielder Nick Evans had an MRI on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery and was diagnosed with what the team described as a "mild quadriceps strain of the right knee"(sic). The Mets said Evans suffered the injury while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico (he last played on Nov. 19) and would undergo three-to-four weeks of therapy at home in Phoenix in preparation for spring training.

While the Mets Parade at LLR isn't too concerned about these injuries affecting the upcoming '09 season, we couldn't help but chuckle just a little bit. Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans have quickly emerged as the Mets new butt buddies. (We hope they stay from the kinds of activities that other Mets' BBs have enjoyed... a la D Dubs and Jose Reyes.)

Daniel and Nick might need a trial separation until they learn they don't have to have the same injuries to be besties. Be a leader, not a follower, Nicky.

Plax Update

Here's what we know so far:

Plaxico Burress showed up to a Manhattan criminal court this morning and was arraigned on two separate counts of criminal possession of a handgun in the second degree after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh Friday night at a club in Midtown. He posted bail of $100,000 and must return to court on March 31, 2009. If convicted, Plax would face a mandatory sentence of 3 ½ years in state prison, with a maximum of 15 years for on each count.

Reports are that Burress was in the VIP area of the nightclub messing with the waistline of his pants when the .40 caliber pistol accidentally discharged. Burress and his entourage, including Giants teammate Antonio Pierce, then left the club. Burress was taken to the hospital shortly thereafter and released Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the gun somehow ended up in Antonio Pierce's car with the magazine missing and the chamber cleared. Pierce could also be facing charges if police discover that he hid or attempted to hide the gun.

This shit is getting deep!! Stay tuned! I'm still not sure how to process all of it. I'm just so glad no one was seriously injured. I can't even begin to wrap my head around how the Giants organization will respond. Personally, now that I know there were no critical injuries or casualties, I'm focusing on the playoffs and not much else!

Here we are…2 weeks into the season and our first major upset in the world of college basketball has occurred. Third ranked Louisville took on in-state “rivals” Western Kentucky. Perhaps Louisville should’ve taken Western Kentucky more seriously. The Hilltoppers made some noise in the NCAA tournament last year, making it all the way to the Sweet 16. WKU has already taken a leap at achieving national recognition as a legit program by beating the 3rd ranked team in the land thanks to the heroics of A.J. Slaughter. Slaughter dropped a career high 25 helping WKU beat its first top 3 ranked opponent since before the first Super Bowl was ever played.

Louisville essentially played themselves out of the game by shooting 2 for 20 from beyond the arc, and 15 for 56 from the field. Sources say that all pharmacies in the Louisville metro area are sold out of “Just for Men” hair color in jet black, but on a positive note Rick Pitino still has a full head of jet black hair.

Last year’s Cinderella team still has a tough road ahead. The schedule for Western Kentucky still has them playing the likes of Florida State, Georgia, and Mississippi State The toppers at 3-2 are having some difficulty with division opponents, but it seems the rest of the NCAA can’t seem to figure them out. With the victory Western Kentucky has improved its all time winning percentage to plus .500 against all teams representing the mighty Big East. The toppers are difficult to understand, but I predict they will be a solid team making a bid for the big dance once again.

In other news, the Tyler Hansbrough-less North Carolina Tarheels are demolishing everyone that steps on the floor with them, but who gives a crap. Ty Lawson may be the best player in college basketball right now, and Danny Graves is right behind him. I hate to say it but the Tarheels will be extremely difficult to contain this season. I have something special lined up for the first team that can beat them. Let’s go TERPS!!!

Plaxico Burress, What The F*ck Are You Doing?!?!

AP is reporting that Giants WR Plaxico Burress is suffering from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, after an incident in a club on Friday night. Burress is suffering from a hamstring injury that was to keep him out of this Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.

Neither Burress or his agent or the New York Giants have commented on the story.

Obviously I shouldn't jump to any conclusions, as no details have been released, but I just can't help myself.

I sincerely hope you found that gun under a chair, and were on your way to turn it into security or something. I've had your back through all of the bullshit, the drama, the fines and suspensions and hold outs. I want to continue to have your back. I hope you haven't embarrassed me, the Giants, and our hometown of Virginia Beach by acting like a fool. You have a beautiful wife and son to think about.

Should The Patriots Trade Tom Brady?

Pick your jaw up off the floor. It's a valid question. Let's think about it...

Matt Cassell has stepped in and led the team to a record of 7-4. The Patriots have a favorable schedule down the stretch, and it is entirely possible they could go on a tear and win the final five games in a row. If they don't take the division out from under the Jets, they have a serious shot at the Wild Card. If even a couple of those things fall into place, its going to be very difficult for the Patriots organization to not to reward Cassel handsomely with a HUGE contract and starting QB position for the 2010 season and beyond.

That's right, I said it.

I'm sure the Patriots are at least discussing the option of trading their injured superstar quarterback, Tom Brady. It may be in the best interest of the team to see what they can get for Brady now. The fact is Matt Cassell will be someone's starting quarterback next year. Will it be for the Patriots? He is a free agent at the end of this season, and his stock has gone WAY up. After two 400 yard games in a row, Cassell has definitely caught the attention of the NFL owners. With so many teams doing the QB shuffle, a 26 year-old with a fresh and accurate arm who has understudied the best QB in the game for three years is a god-send. The Patriots would be compensated handsomely in a Tom Brady trade. They could get a couple of big name position players, filling holes on on offense or defense. If the Patriots allow Cassell to leave as a free agent, they get squat. It's all very similar to the move the Patriots made in 2001 when Tom Brady took over for Drew Bledsoe.

Now, the question is can Matt Cassell be as good as Tom Brady? Well the talent and potential are obviously there. Now lets see what the stats tell us.

Over Tom Brady's first 15 games in 2001 he had 413 attempts, 264 completions for 2,843 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while being sacked 41 times.

Over Matt Cassel's first 11 games this year he has 359 attempts, 238 completions for 2,615 yards with 13 touchdowns and 8 interceptions while being sacked 34 times.

We'll be able to make a more direct comparison during week 15, but these numbers are comparable and its already clear that Cassel matches up after only 11 weeks as a starter.

Take whichever side you want, but all I'm saying is if the Pats decide to make Brady's comeback someone else's problem - I wouldn't be upset...or surprised.

This week’s recipient has been overlooked for a couple of weeks, and is the second Green Bay Packer to receive the honor. The award for the LLR name of the week goes to none other than Johnny Jolley Jr. The 320 pound mass of humanity known as the Jolley Green Bay Giant is following a familiar pattern to our names of the week. Jolley has had his legal problems, being arrested in Houston earlier this year on felony drug charges. Is it a prerequisite if you play in the NFL, and have a funny name, to be a menace to organized civilization?

Johnny was busted in Houston by the HPD. They seen him rollin’, they hated, and they caught him ridin’ dirty. How dirty? Jolley was caught with possession of over 200 grams of codeine. Jolley now faces a court mandated curfew, random drug screening, and could face even more severe repercussions for sippin’ on the sizzurp. If he is convicted and faces prison time, I doubt anyone in the slammer would mess with a 320 pound man named Jolley. Congratulations on your LLR honor Johnny Jolley Jr!

While the Mets haven't spoken publicly about any dissatisfaction with their tandem of Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro, some competing executives say the Mets, whose top priorities remain a closer and a starting pitcher, appear open to trading either catcher.

Should the Mets find a deal for their catchers, longtime Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, a free agent, could be a possibility for them. Mets GM Omar Minaya has always liked Ivan Rodriguez, but it isn't known whether they'd consider I-Rod, as well.

Ummm... yeah. Just saying. Let's get him and keep him til Mauer's contracts expires in 2010! We could use some good solid catching in Queens.

Barkley and Vitale Inducted Into the College Hoops Hall of Fame

This past Sunday night saw a few noteworthy basketball superstars inducted into the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, including the legendary Charles Barkley and the incomparable Dick Vitale.

Barkley played three years of college ball for Auburn University, racking up many accolades in the process. Auburn retired his #34 Jersey in 2001.

I'm an ACC girl, and a Duke fan, so OBVIOUSLY Dick Vitale is my favorite college basketball announcer! To me, Vitale's voice is synonymous with college basketball - the CBHF obviously feels the same :) This will be his 30th year with the ESPN Network.

Red Sox offer Varitek a new contract!!

I don't want to get my hopes up, but this is good news! The Red Sox offered Captain Jason Varitek a one year deal, the financials of which have not been disclosed. The Red Sox probably low-balled him, considering his '08 was packed with career-worsts, .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs. Any baseball idiot knows that Jason Varitek is more than just a catcher and a captain. He's a great defensive catcher, and he can guide a shaky pitcher through a snow storm. John Lester, anyone?

Jason Varitek has played his entire career in Boston. He's the only player to wear the old fashioned high red socks. He deserves to finish his career right where he started it. Now that an offer is on the table, this could go one of three ways.

1. Varitek accepts the offer and finishes out his career in Boston. Unless he has a hugely successful '09, I'm nearly confident he'll retire after next season.

2. Varitek rejects the offer, deciding instead to go out very close to the top with that C on his chest and 2 World Series Championships rings on his hand. After going 86 years without a championship, how many legendary Red Sox stars in history can say that??

3. Varitek rejects the offer and signs with another team for what will probably be not much more money that he'll make in a final season in Boston. Can any team make him an offer sweet enough to leave his beloved Boston behind? And let's not forget about the personal issues he's dealing with this year. In case you hadn't heard, his wife of 12 years and mother to his three daughters filed for divorce at the end of July. These are all factors, no doubt.

As much as I would LOVE to see Jason play in Queens, I don't actually think my Mets will go after him. I do think we could use a veteran catcher to get our pitching staff on track, but not necessarily a catcher in the twilight of his career. Jason Varitek will turn 37 in April.

I'll cross my fingers for option #1. Anyone else want to weight in?

“Jimmy-V Classic Observations – Welcome Back College Basketball”

Part I – Duke Blue Devils vs. Southern Illinois Salukis

Well it is my honor to ring in the college basketball season. The Jimmy-V Coaches Against Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden is all said and done. I was lucky enough to catch a couple of games, and watch some teams who show great promise for the season ahead. First I will begin by saying I had no bias in either game, as I am a diehard Maryland Terrapin supporter. Since Maryland wasn’t in the building I was able to enjoy some class-A college basketball without wanting to choke the referees, players, or any opposing fans.

Game one of the double header pitted the illustrious program from the University of Duke against the Salukis of Southern Illinois. Just to clarify in case all of you out there are wondering what the hell a Saluki is, a Saluki is one of the oldest known breeds of domesticated dogs in the world dating back to ancient Egypt. I will forego any zoology or history lessons, and get down to business. The Salukis have had some recent success, winning the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 5 of the last six years. From what I saw at the tournament, they will have to work very hard to make it six of seven in the Missouri Valley Conference. Their conference being considered a mid major still has the likes of Creighton and Drake. The Salukis were clearly overmatched by the powerhouse that is Duke. The lone bright spot is that the Salukis have a player named Nick Evans. The gawky 6’11” freshman fouled out of the game almost before the game began.

The Blue Devils, on the other hand, looked like a disciplined team that you would only expect from a squad led by Coach K himself.

I was mostly impressed by two things. Number one is how Greg Paulus has taken to a leadership role. The smallest guy on the court had the entire Duke team hanging off of his every word. I was close enough to hear Greg’s motivational words of wisdom and I wanted to go out there and beat the Salukis myself. The second thing that impressed me about the Blue Devils was their crisp, and discipline style of play. This has been a trademark of the Duke program for as long as Coach K has been at the helm. Even with inexperienced youngsters playing in the world’s most famous arena, in one of the most exciting cities in the world, the team did not lose any focus. The Blue Devils will be a contender in the ACC this season. All I have to say is watch out for the TERPS!!!

Michael Vick Out of the Slammer

Michael Vick is back in VA today where he will once again be facing dogfighting charges. He is in isolation in protective custody, but is supposedly being treated just like any other prisoner.

He is expected to plead guilty in a deal with prosecutors that calls for a suspended sentence and probation.

We at the LLR hope he gets the maximum sentence.

So Page 6 is reporting that apparently David Wright at his annual "Do the Wright Thing" even for his charity, David had to beat a group of older women (cougars) off with his stick...Ok, well maybe not really with his stick, which I'm sure many of you ladies wouldn't mind, but apparently the women were knocking over little kids just trying to get David to sign a ball. At one point, Wright was overheard pleading, "Ladies, calm down! Please, relax."

Ladies, seriously, this was an event for his charity, it's not like David was at a club or something...I would say I'm just jealous, but the description of the women knocking people over is really not what I'm into.

Cheating At Fantasy Football

As many of you know, this year Boogie and I joined an all-girl fantasy football league. Despite it being our first time playing, both Boogie and I have vicious competitive streaks and have been determined to kick everyone in our path's ass.

It hasn't quite gone as planned. While we both have respectable records, neither of us are the head of the pack. This is infuriating as no one in our league has a clue what's going on. The only conclusion anyone can come to is the girls who are doing the best are the girls who are cheating. And by cheating, I mean asking someone else in their life who knows better.

Fine. I tried that too. But after having help on my draft landed me with garbage Jake Delhomme as my quarterback and my father's helpful advice for a better QB being JT O'Sullivan, I am over other people's help. Everyone knows about 10 times less than I do.

So today Boogie and I concocted a plan. She has somehow acquired Matt Cassel, Aaron Rodgers AND Eli Manning. She offered to lend me Eli for the week so I could beat the tar out of this girl who has stomped all over us all season.

Our attempts at pulling this off have been fruitless. First we looked to trade. It turns out the trade deadline was November 11th so that's a no go. Then we look into the rules to see if she can drop him and I can pick him up. We learn that the waivers go through between midnight and 6 AM, so we plot for her to drop Eli at 11:58 PM and me to immediately pick him up. Unfortunately, after a closer look at the rules, we learn that he has to stay on waivers for 24 hours and Eli is too big of a name. These other girls who know less than we do would still recognize the name, Eli Manning and snatch him up.

So now I really hate fantasy football. It refuses to let me win. I can't even figure out how to cheat! I would love if any of you fantasy aficionados out there would send me a private message and walk me through cheating.

I'm done playing fair.

Brady Quinn Is More Of a Man Than Tony Romo

Not really hard to believe, but it turns out that Quinn is manlier than Tony Romo. As I've said in numerous posts, Tony Romo was unable to play for a month because of a broken pinkie. Hey Tony, a real man sucks it up and keep playing (Brett Favre played with a broken thumb), and apparently Quinn is following in Favre's footsteps. ESPN reports that Quinn broke his index finger on his right hand on Monday during the Bills game, and will reportedly play on Sunday. More and more I become a Brady Quinn fan...

Defending Champs Already Facing Problems

It was announced today that Philadelphia Phillie Chase Utley will be undergoing hip surgery that could possibly place him on the DL until June. With one of their core stars out for the first two months, this does not bode well for the '08 Champs.

There has been speculation that the Phils may try to obtain Minnesota Twin free agent Nick Punto in the interim. It looks doubtful that they will go after any kind of high profile second baseman as the new acquirement will most likely ride the pine once Utley returns to his little league park.

The Boston Herald has posted a picture of Tom Brady's locker now that he's back in town. The funny thing is, is that for a hometown newspaper you'd think they'd be a lot nicer to the guy known as the 'Golden Boy of the NFL'.

Watch Out Baseball Fans!

The ladies are coming to get you! And no, not Boogie and I, though I suppose that is a valid fear as well. I'm talking about little Eri Yoshida from Japan.

So who is this girl and why should you all know her name? Eri is a 16 year old school girl who is about to become the first female to play professional baseball in Japan. She was drafted by the Kobe 9 Cruise, a team that will play its' inaugural season this year with a woman on the mound. She was one of only 33 players selected in the draft. Apparently she throws a nasty side-arm knuckleball and hopes to follow in the footsteps of Tim Wakefield. We sure hope she does too!

When asked for comment, Wakefield replied via text:

"Hope I can see her pitch one day, I'm honored that someone wants to become me. I wish her the best of luck. Maybe I can learn something from her."

Murphy Ineligible For 09 Rookie of the Year

According to Marty Noble of MLB.com, Daniel Murphy has used up his 'rookie' status for the award. According to the rules, if a player has 130+ at bats in a single season he can not be considered for the award the next year. Since Murphy pinch hit in the final game of the season giving him 130 ABs on the year, he is ineligible for the award next year. Had he walked during that at bat, he would still be eligible.

This past weekend, I finally got around to reading Linda Cohn's autobiography. And let me tell you, that woman is amazing. Fully inspiring with her "Get it done" attitude. If you haven't read it, I urge you to pick up a copy.

But in reading Linda's book, I learned what a dope I am. She spoke about her relationship with John Ondransik of Five for Fighting and how she, as a hardcore hockey fan, had to appreciate him for his band's name.

I am sure most of you already realized that, but my reaction was, "Ohhh, that's what that means! How did that never occur to me?" I immediately called Shinny and she laughed at me for never realizing that.

So it got me to thinking about what other bands' monikers are a take on a sporting reference. And music being my other passion, I had a great time compiling this list for you all. I hope you dig it as much as I do.

Five for Fighting
Let's start with the inspiration for this whole article. Ondransik and co. take their name from a hockey penalty - five minutes for fighting. If their music wasn't such loser rock, I would probably be really into them on this basis alone.

Switchfoot
Switchfoot is a term used in surfing to reference the abillity to be able to switch your feet to face in either direction. Clever terminology. Despite living in SoCal, I have never been a surfer so that one had gone right over my head.

Fastball
I don't think this one requires any explanation. Next.

Luscious Jackson
They are named after basketball player Lucious Jackson, whose name was mispronounced during a telecast as "Luscious Jackson".

Pearl Jam (used to be Mookie Blaylock)
There are two different variations on this story. This first involves Eddie Vedder's grandmother, Pearl. Pearl supposedly made a peyote jelly/jam , which as kids they called pearl jam. But the other variation on the tale is that the name comes from NBA player Mookie Blaylock -- it's his nickname. Band members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were huge fans of Blaylock, loved his peculiar name and wished to just call their band "Mookie Blaylock". But Blaylock protested, so they used his nickname "Pearl Jam" instead. You be the judge.

The Starting Line
This young band of rockers takes their name from the beginning of a track and field race. And they're super cute.

Yellowcard
These boys from SoCal (who took me to my first strip club.. random fact of the day) apparently must be huge soccer fans. Yellow card refers to how a soccer official calls out an infraction of the rules. Might have been a little more badass to be Redcard.

Moving on...

Ace of Base
This super strange band name references Section 16 of the rules adopted in 1860 by the National Association of Base Ball Players ("No ace nor base can be made upon a foul ball ...").

Rookie of the Year
I would like to claim this was a testament to the lovely Evan Longoria, but it really is just a tribute to the award itself. I will be holding auditions soon for my new band, sexy Third Basemen. That one will officially pay homage to Longoria.. and David Wright.

Bowling for Soup
Terrible band. Terrible name.

Faith No More
Named after a race horse they saw listed on a racing form.

Smash Mouth
Football players use this slang term in any game with a lot of blocking or tackling. I would like to tackle this band's piece of crap lead singer. God, I hate them.

Yo La Tengo
Yo la tengo translates to "I have it" from Spanish - said to be the phrase called out by Hispanic baseball players when fielding a pop fly ball. Singer/guitar player Ira Kaplan got the expression from a book he was reading about baseball called The Five Seasons.

Gnarls Barkley
A take on basketball legend and LLR homey, Charles Barkley. I hope they like turkey reubens and key lime pie!

Gym Class Heroes
This one is a little bit of a stretch but I sure do love these boys, so I have elected to include them.

Nickelback
A nickelback is a cornerback who serves as the fifth (in addition to the typical four) defensive backs on the defense. A base defense contains four defensive backs, consisting of two cornerbacks, and two safeties. Adding an extra back makes five, hence the term "nickel".

Glassjaw
A slang reference to a boxer with a suspect chin

The Mendoza Line
A term I actually didn't know (though Shinny informed me that she learned about it on Beverly Hills, 90210). It essentially means when someone's batting average has gone from being below average to totally shitty. I could have used that term this year... not mentioning any names.

Kaiser Chiefs
They were named after the South African football club Kaizer Chiefs, a team which former Leeds United defender Lucas Radebe played for.

Simply Red
A play on the band's love for Manchester United.

BCS Playoff Endorsed By Obama

During his interview with Steve Kroft broadcast last night on 60 Minutes, President-Elect Obama says he believes that college football should have a playoff. Like many issues, I agree with the President-Elect on this issue as well.

Many say that it's because it would make the season too long for the players...However, I believe it's about money. For years, the BCS has had multiple bowl games which have different sponsors. Having a playoff would eliminate some of these sponsors and therefore would make less money for the BCS. However, this doesn't have to be the case. The BCS could sell naming rights to the rounds of the BCS playoff at a higher cost (because it's more games) than it could for a single bowl game.

If it's about making the season too long for the players why do they wait 3/4 weeks between Conference championships and bowl games? I sure know it's not exams. Let's be honest, these guys don't go to class and they sure as hell don't take exams.

BCS, do these kids a justice and make a playoff.

Pujols Wins NL MVP Award

Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols won his second NL MVP award. Pujols, who played the season with an injured right elbow that he eventually had surgery on following the season, hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs. Pujols won his first NL MVP award in 2005.

Although he led the league in homeruns with 48, Ryan Howard finished second in MVP voting, probably due to his disgusting batting average (.251), high number of strike outs (199), and the little league ballpark the Phillies call home, known as Citizen's Bank Park.

Mark Cuban Charged With insider Trading
